Mickey Thompson SSS Winch Challenge Series – Round 1
Event Report and Images by Shantyl O’Donnell – SS PhotographyRound 1 of the Mickey Thompson SSS Winch Challenge Series has been run and won out at Landcruiser Mountain Park over the weekend just gone with the largest field in some time, 22 teams.
Racing got underway on Friday night with 2 stages set in a side by side setting with a few GPS points added for good measure.
Saturday teams tackled a total of 6 stages across the course of the day. The first was a 12km GPS, a great stage for competitors to really put the right foot down, followed by 2 tracks again in a side by side setting only this time with lots and lots of water. Next was a typical winch style stage with a compulsory ground anchor and then 2 combined GPS and winch stages to finish.
Sunday sent teams into more side by side stages using some of the hills from Friday night………..they always look worse during the day. These stages proved tough with a small roll for Carl and Terry in the Dial a Truck Patrol as well as Mick and Rory in the No Kids Racing Toyota Hilux on the same hill. An unlucky roll also for Paul and David in the Costal Shade GU when mid roll they were stopped by a tree which broke and sent the boys over again while completing one of the GPS stages from the day before.
Congratulations to all teams on a fantastic weekend. On 797 point and in 3rd place was the Defender of Andrew and Mark from British Off Road, 2nd on 838 points was Carl and Terry in the Dial a Truck Racing GQ Patrol and taking out 1st with a total of 855 points was David and Spencer in the Locked Up Racing GQ Patrol.
Round 2 dates have been set for the 12 – 14 June 2015 at Landcruiser Mountain Park.
