Rumble In The Rocks

Mitch Thorpe hitting out at Rumble In The Rocks

The wild Queensland weather of the Australia Day long weekend may have put a damper on the inaugural Rumble on the Rocks competition held at Cityview 4WD Park in the hills of the Scenic Rim near Beaudesert but the Competitors tackled the fast flowing tracks with a “never say die” attitude. Stage one on Saturday morning saw Michael Sweeny rolled his Buggy 1 3/4 times after the rear end slid round on a tricky side angled rock ledge, His Navi Ben was taken to see the doctor after getting his hand jammed between the rollcage and the roof but returned soon after with a bandaged hand, the Buggy was a bit the worse for wear but was able to finish the second stage with a good run. With the creeks flowing some of the rocks in the Cals Creek track were hidden by the torrent but more than half the field managed to drive it anyway. With plenty of vehicles getting stuck and a short gap between vehicles at the start line a few daring passing moves added an extra level of excitement to the comp. The night stage was moved to 7 AM Sunday morning in the interests of safety with the long creek run to be held straight after.

The event was won by Mitch Thorpe and Matt Jillett, ahead of Michael Sweeney & Rob Moore. Kerrod Ward and Ben Henry rounded out the podium in third.
