Update July 19: Edition 21 of Dirtcomp see’s all quarters of the 2010 competition season in full swing. Whether it is winch comps, offroad racing or all terrain events you are in to, the Dirtcomp team has been racing around the country to capture the action.

As we go to press the proposed new Unlimited Production Class specs for Offroad Racing have just been released. Which will potentially see the reigns pulled in on the Extreme 2WD and 4WD Classes, with a move amongst other things to production based gearboxes, transfer cases and diff housings in these categories.

I could see the re-ignition of the old Class 6 or Challenger Class buggy, based on similar principles (the utilisation of a production based transaxle - VW, Renault, Porsche) being worth serious consideration. Especially with the gap widening between the AORC level cars in most classes and the buggies which make up the bulk of the numbers at state and club level events. Keep the engine capacity limited to 1600cc, without a restrictor plate as seen previously (no one likes driving a mobile speed bump) and limit the chassis to beam front ends and there would be a large number of cars meet the criteria straight away - many of which are gathering dust in the shed. There is a poll running on this topic, jump on and let us know what you think!.

See you at the track

E21: Gasoline GO!
Image

Every easter, die hard off road rally fans converge to the heart of nsw to compete in one of this country’s few navigational races. the small country town of condobolin plays host to the condo 750 and as the name suggests, puts competitors through approximately 750km of varied terrain, with the aid of their trusty navigators and road books.  Each year brings a new course and new challenges for auto, moto and quad competitors. This year, the much welcomed rain a few weeks prior to the event brought a new challenge….long grass. A HTS (Hard To See) turn can be tricky at the best of times, but cover it in long grass, and your in for a navigational nightmare. Large swarms of grasshoppers added to the threat of overheating from blocked radiators, so it was out with the fly screen!

E21: Intercooler Basics
Image

An intercooler is a heat exchanger between the turbo and the intake manifold which is designed to remove heat from the intake charge that the turbo puts in whilst compressing the intake air.

When air is compressed in a turbocharger the temperature increases dramatically causing the air to become less dense and oxygen rich which has a negative impact on the combustion process.

By removing this heat with an intercooler you provide cooler denser air which improves the combustion process which has a direct impact to power output.

E21: West Oz Challenge
Image

Located just 125 kilometers from Perth, the magnificent natural terrain of Mogumber played host to the 2010 West Oz Challenge. Designed to draw upon the best elements of the East Coast events, the West Oz combined winch challenge and cross country style stages to test the limits of the 19 teams which entered on the Anzac Day long weekend. Usually the domain of GQ and GU Patrols, the West Oz field encompassed a wide range of trucks including  75 and 80 Series Landcruisers, a Suzuki Sierra, Jeep Wrangler and the six strong Rovacraft Team made up of Rangies, a Disco and a SWB Defender. Which across the weekend, would all have an opportunity to star on the cleverly designed stages.

E18: CLIFFHANGER 2009
Image

With a five year history, the Ironman Cliffhanger extreme 4x4 offroad challenge held near the outback opal mining town of White Cliffs in the central west of NSW has grown every year, with 2009 setting the benchmark for extreme offroad events. 47 Competitors started this year's challenge with a massive 55 initial Entries. Mechanical failure and finances held a few from attending but for Tim and Tom Margitich it was a devastating blow to roll their Series 2 Discovery with race truck in tow in Outback SA on the way to this years challenge. Luckily both escaped without injury and we hope so see them back in action soon.
